I'm Valerie Tafoya, a recent graduate from the University of Michigan, where I majored in Ecosystem Science & Management and Environmental Justice. I’m passionate about advocating for Indigenous rights within natural resource management and strive to be a positive force for change. My goal is to amplify Indigenous voices, values, and efforts, ensuring that these communities lead conversations and projects about their lands and resources. I approach my work with empathy and intention, always respecting the autonomy of each community and supporting their leadership in environmental initiatives. I aim to assist in combining science-based management with a socioecological perspective, focusing on preserving traditional knowledge and managing both game and non-game fish and wildlife species and their habitats.

Outside of my professional aspirations, I love spending time outdoors, especially birdwatching to spot and maybe take a picture of various raptors and waterfowl. At home, I'm an avid [Nintendo] video game enthusiast, enjoy quality time with my pets, and enjoy reading books or listening to podcasts [English or Spanish] on science, nature, social studies, and political science. My favorite days are rainy days when I can listen to the rain fall and read a good book.
