Informational interviews are a chance to connect with a professional in your field of interest to learn about what they do, how they got there, and ask questions for advice about your career path.

You are invited to connect with a staff member from The Wilderness Society, the leading conservation organization working to protect wilderness and inspire Americans to care for our wild places, for an informal interview.

Together we are working to address a core inequity in the field: lack of a professional network for young, diverse leaders in the conservation and outdoor sectors, to talk with about identifying and pursuing career options. Sign up with over 40 staff from The Wilderness Society by Friday, March 22nd. First come, first serve.

Here’s the plan:

Pick who you want to talk to

  • Look in this spreadsheet to find someone of interest. You can read their bios here.

  • In the spreadsheet in columns E through I, if it says Available, that means there is a slot open to talk to that person. Delete the text that says Available and enter your name to claim an informational interview with the person in that row.

  • Feel free to reach out to Hannah Malvin at The Wilderness Society to help find someone relevant to your interests. Hannah_Malvin@tws.org or 202-429-3941

Email them to set up a time to talk

  • Find their email address in the spreadsheet

  • In the subject line write: Informational Interview

  • Ask when would be a good time for a 30 minute phone call to discuss your career interests.

Sample Informational Interview Questions

  • Please read their bio in advance

  • What is your role at The Wilderness Society?

    • What does the day to day look like?

    • What do you enjoy most about your work?

    • What skills are important in your work?

  • What are some of the steps you took to get to this point in your career?

  • What suggestions would you have for someone looking to enter into the conservation field and your area of expertise?

  • Are there any resources (programs, events, books, blogs, podcasts) you recommend I look into?

  • What has been one of your favorite projects that you've worked on and why?
